I grew up in Western Jutland, near a river, with its water flow and transport, running down the year round. This early "being" closely linked to the water cycle, I guess, influenced my painting. Gave it its own dynamics and naivety. At the same time the rythm of the flowing water and the mystique of understanding the rivervalley and the flow also influenced the educational direction I chose. First as a civilengineer (specialized in hydrology and hydraulics). Later in my practice as a working hydrologist (now with 25 years of experience within the field of hydrology and modelling). My own practical experience started with hydrometry and methods for measurement of flow in rivers. Later I began to explore groundwater modelling, and subsequently, I focused on modelling of the interactionen between groundwater and surface water exchange on a catchment scale. Recently, the challenge of integrating knowledge from modelling and monitoring became a new research fields, and how to best involve stakeholders in the decision making process and adaptive water management. This moves me toward a growing interest for better understanding the human factor as part of management of natural resources. Then, two years ago, I finalised a master degree in Psychology of Organisation (MPO) at RUC which again provided new inspiration for me, now coming in from social sciences. All the way there was a dialectic interaction between drawing and painting on the one side, and practising hydrology on the other.

Emotions stirred by artwork are part of Magic, so are the beauty and poetry suggested through a landscape - created by the impulses and inner reality of the Artist when he organizes them on a canvas - , the surreal and fantastic dimensions of our mind in all of its expressions are intimately connected to our inconscious which is a magical world. Memory and memories are magic traces of our reality. Art is magic as it has the unlimited power of its pictorial vocabulary at its disposal in the act of creating. In this way Art is akin to Life because it is a Creation.

A soul born of Africa, now domiciled in Australia, together with use of vibrant colour, varied textures and mixed media juxtapose to present the unique talent that is Melanie Miller. In your face, powerful, abstract images encapsulate her fresh and unusual Afro - Australasian perspective on her environment. Influences and background are a large part of what makes Melanie's work exceptional. It is the tapestry of Egypt in her mother, Russian in her father and a youth at one with sea and sky in Muizenberg Cape Town that is woven into her work.

I am an artist and landscape painter whose paintings depict the beauty of the western United States - its mountains, rugged coast, creeks, rivers, valleys, deserts, rockscapes, farmlands, orchards, and vineyards. I also paint wherever I travel and am showing some paintings from France and Greece. Many of my landscape paintings are painted "en plein air", or outside on location... Most of my studio work in the past year has been done using encaustics. Encaustic paintings are painted with beeswax, resin, and pigment. It is an ancient process that was used by the Egyptians and Greeks, and examples have been found in Egyptian tombs...

The way I paint is simple, I have the certain atmosphere in mind: a fast fading memory of the years gone by, brought to me by the first morning breeze or a sudden attack to my senses produced by the colours of autumn, winter and spring.

My artwork is created from the heart, inspired by a perpetual wonder at the present and by memories, both personal and collective, of the past. Fortunately, I enjoyed an intensely stimulating childhood, growing up in Charleston, the surrounding sea islands, and up-country mountain retreats. My recollections include colorful gardens, peaceful marsh-land panoramas, beautiful gardens and colorful interiors cherished by generations of my family. My mother and her mother were both painters and gardeners and taught me to see the nuances of color in nature.

...I attended Iowa State University and was enrolled in the Graphic Design program. This was my major for three years before I switched to a different major. Although I believe my college classes are invaluable, I would still consider myself self-taught. I have been working at being an artist for close to 17 years now. I have experimented with different mediums, subject matters and being that I am self-published have made the efforts to learn about marketing and the business end of being an artist. I am a versatile, prolific Iowa born and raised artist. I work with the mediums of acrylics, alkyds, watercolor and a mixed media of watercolor and colored pencil. My subject matter ranges from snowmen to horses and cattle to fruit and landscapes. All of my art is inspired by the connection I have to Iowa and the serene beauty that I see around me..
